FAMOUS ART COLLECTION
Barnes Foundation Open To Public The renowned art collection of the Barnes Foundation, near Philadelphia, has been opened to the public for the first time in its 33year history. The paintings, collected by the late Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a pharmaceutical manufacturer, are hung on two floors of an eighteenth century . style French mansion. Formerly they were used exclusively as illustrative material for teaching, the function of the Barnes Foundation. The Barnes collection, considered one of the most complete private collections of modern art in existence, is most famous for its examples of French impressionists and post impressionists. It numbers some 1000 paintings, including more than 100 Renoirs, 100 Cezannes, some 70 Matisse oils, and an accumulation of Picassos, Rosseaus, Van Goghs, and Modiglianis. There also are a few old masters, a large collection of African sculptures, period furniture, tapestries, and Greek, Egyptian, and medieval sculpture. —(U.S.I.S.)
