Rakaia Huts
Sir, —In their report to the county council the engineers concerned stated that the level of the Rakaia river was 21 inches above the level of the road at the entrance to the huts. So what? The modern bulldozer has an Bft blade and can push up a bank 4ft high in one mighty shove. Ashburton (population 10,000) is protected from the North branch of the Ashburton river by a 6ft earth stopbank which extends north from below Digby’s bridge. During a flood a few years ago, water reached within a few inches of the top. The centre of Ashburton. 3j miles south, is over 30ft below river level at this bridge. Are our engineers going to recommend evacuation of the town because of this? Not likely. The stopbank planned by the hut-holders is to run almost parallel with the river. So the chances of it “bursting” through are almost negligible. —Yours, etc., LET US TRY. April 24, 1961.
