Rugby League BOARD DECLINES WAIKATO REQUEST
A meeting of the Canterbury Rugby League Board of Control on Monday declined an invitation to play a match •gainst Waikato on Sunday, May 14. The meeting received a letter from the Waikato League inviting Canterbury to play on that date as the Canterbury team would be playing against Auckland the day before.
Members of the board felt that to play the match against Waikato would mean taking possibly two more players north to allow for the possibility of injuries in the match against Auckland.
Advice was also received from the New Zealand Rugby League Council to the effect that it did not think it advisable to go ahead with the request from. Canterbury to play an extra game against the Australian team in Christchurch.
The letter said that the Australian Bond of Control had refused at one stage to play four matches In eight days. It was not likely, then, said the letter, that Australia would accede to a further match, which would mean three matches in three days. At present, said the letter, the team Was set down io play tn Chrittchurch on a Saturday, Greymouth on the Sunday, and New Plymouth the next Wednesday. Start of Tour Canterbury’s delegate on the New Zealand council, Mr W. Moyle, writing to the board at control, said that the council had had advice from the English Rugby League saying ill wanted the New Zealand tour to start in England on September 6. Mr Moyle said New Zealand was writing back that it wonted to start the tour on August 19. Mr Moyle, In hie letter, slso advised the arrangements for the New Zealand council's annual meeting in Auckland next week-end. The meeting would open on the afternoon of April 28 In the evening a complimentary dinner would be given by the delegates to the retiring president. Mr J. W. Watson. The meeting would continue the next morning. M- A. J. Atkinson was appointed manager of the Canterbury team to play the West Coast at Greymoufo oo May 7. A member of the New Zealand soteotion panel, Mr T. F McKenzie, was present at the meeting and gave an outline of the arrangements for the national coaching school’which will be held in Christchurch in June.
