Indoor Basketball WOMEN’S CLUB COMPETITION
First Round Pbyed The flrat round of the Canterbury Women's indoor Basketball weekly competition was played on Monday night tn the Crichton Cobbers’ gymnasium. Moat senior teams fielded many new club members of representative standard, and keen and even competition should be forthcoming. Playing in the senior competition for the first time. Holy Trinity found difficulty in penetrating the tight zone defence of tlie more experienced Rex players. Scoring was slow to open, and although Rex had many opportunities to score, shots were hurried and rebounding was poor. The Holy Trinity team was forced by the zone defence of Rex. to take many long shots, which tailed to find the basket. Too much speed by Holy Trinity, which resulted in erratic passing, gave Rex the opportunity to dominate Play. The final score was Rex A 10, Holy Trinity 4. . -v Last year’s . competition winners. Rebels, were slow to settle in their first game of the season against University. Passing by both teams in the first half was not of a particularly high standard, and resulted in scrappy play. During the second half Rebels played more controlled basketball and on several occasions took advantage of University’s slow defence. For the less experienced University side. M. Elms combined well with H. Bliek. who scored 10 of her team’s points. The game was won by Rebels. 24-14. Overlanders, fielding a new combmation of players, were quick to find the openings in the defence of the Teachers' College team. T. Visit scored eight points for Overianders during the first six minutes of the game, and play was dominated by this team throughout.
