Chambers Ask For Better Roads To Scenic Areas

<Kew Zealand Preu AuoctattoM

DUNEDIN, April 35. The Associated Chambers of Commerce conference decided to impress on the National Roads Board the need for improving the main highways to scenic resorts. Introducing the remit on behalf of Oamaru, Mr J. W. Holley (Dunedin) said that during the first three months of this year 40,000 people passed through the official observation building at the Benmpre hydro scheme, but only about 11.000 people were prepared to use the inferior roads giving access to the southern lakes district. The Oamaru chamber felt certain that had the sealed road continued from Benmore to the lakes district many more people would have visited the lakes district through the northern access. A remit suggesting there should be a national price for petrol was lost. With a new oil refinery planned at Whangarei, Mr O. K. Winstone (Auckland) said it was most untimely to ask the Government to interfere with the petrol price structure at this stage. The conference carried a remit “that further representations be made by the executive for the amalgama-

tion of classes 4 and 5 under the motor vehiole third party personal risk insurance.” Clause 4 and 5 deal with the definition of cars for business and private purposes. It was pointed out that many cars were insured under clause 4, for private cars, when they should be covered under

clause 3 which included business cars. Officers elected for the ensuing year are:—President, Mr S. L Moses (Wellington); vice-president, Mr J. W. Holley (Dunedin); immediate past-president. Mr 3. Roy Smith (Christchurch); executive, Messrs P. J. Harris (Whangarei), E. P. Salmon. R. S. Woollams (Auckland), H. E. Calcott (Hamilton), D. Pool (New Plymouth). H. R. Holt (Napiet), T. M. N. Rodgers (Palmerston North), G. K. Hansard, C. D. A. George, W. E. Lavelle. A. R. Simm. H. E. Smith. G. E. Stock, W. H. Hindle. H. J. L. McDonald, R. C. Macdonald. Dr. G. A. Lau (Wellington), Messrs L. V. Phillips, J. R. Gaynor (Hutt Valley). W. Graham Hitchins (Blenheim). R. H. Clark (Christchurch), I. R. McAUum (Dunedin), R. N. Adams (In-

vercargill). The 1903 conference will be held in New Plymouth.
