SCHOOL SAVINGS BANK
Deposits Exceed £850,000 (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 6. Deposits in the School Savings Bank rose to £851,600 by the end of last year, according to figures released by the Post-master-General (Mr T. P. Shand) today. It was apparent, he said, that support from the parents and the co-operation of the teachers had helped greatly in placing the scheme in its present firm position. Last year, 102 more schools joined the scheme, making 1832 schools in New Zealand taking part. The total number of accounts is now 170,484. Top school of the year for the third time in succession was the Ohakune Primary School, with 13,483 deposits. Naenae School was next, with 8015 deposits. The top 10 schools for the year ended December 31, 1956, were: Ohakune. 13,483 deposits, 682 accounts; Naenae, 8015, 693; Carterton, 6615, 432; Marchwiel (Timaru), 6321, 611; Taita Central, 5704, 624; Apanui (Whakatane), 5565, 464; Rata Street (Lower Hutt). 5538, 552; Woolston, 5512, 389; Wharenui, 5252. 447; Grey Main, 5181, 475.
