CURRENT NOTES
Miss Dorothy Allan-Hay, of Pietermaritzburg, Natal, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs Robert Duncan, and Mrs Belton and Miss E. Chamberlain while visiting Christchurch, left for the North Island yesterday. Miss Allan-Hay’s present tour has lasted over three years and has taken her to Britain, Spain, Australia, Papua, New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, California. British Columbia and the West Indies.
Mrs E. Gower presided at the annual meeting of the Avonhead branch, of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Presentations were made to the retiring president. Mrs Warren, and to Mrs Royds, who retired after completing 10 years as secretary. The following officers were elected; president, Mrs Martin; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Ferguson and McPherson; secretary, Mrs Marks; treasurer, Mrs Royds; committee, Mesdames Riches, Strachan. Campbell, Franks, McKay and Curry.
Entertainment was provided at the social afternoon of the Sydenham Pensioners’ Club by a concert party directed by Mrs H. Middleton. Those taking part were: Mrs J. E. Mason (piano solo), Mrs Hall (songs), Mrs V. Gale (elocution), Mrs Voller (songs), and Mrs H. Middleton (recitations). The accompanist was Mrs J. E. Mason.
The Plunket nurse, Miss F. Meyers, was thanked for her work in the district at the annual meeting of the Woolston subbranch of the Plunket Society. The president (Mrs S. Clark) made a presentation to Miss Meyers, who is to be married shortly. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs S. Clark; vice-presidents, Mrs D. Wombweli and Miss B. K. Merton; secretary, Mrs D. S. Basher; treasurer, Mrs E. Mather; committee, Mesdames Dwyer, Rimmer, Wright, Kenniwell and Osborne; advisory committee, Messrs Simmonds, Keys, Smith and Roberts.
The St. Albans League ol Mothers held its annual meeting recently. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs W Harvey; secretary, Mrs A. M. McCullum; treasurer, Mrs A. Mason, committee, Mesdames P. D. Packard, G. Crozier, W. S. Good. L. Pilgrim, T. A. Shears, D. Brown, H. A. Ord, W. W. Palmer, J G. Cardwell, L. J Smith and J. A. Bain. Miss A Stewart addressed the gathering on home decorating. Miss C. E. Robinson was guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the literary circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club. Mrs Le Cren sang solos and Mesdames W. E. Olds and C. Shaw played piano duets. The leader, Mrs H. P. Wise, thanked the speaker and artists.
Society’s Name Change.— The Royal Empire Society, London, is likely later this year to become the Royal Commonwealth Society A special meeting will be called to adopt the new name, but because of the society’s Royal Charter, the proposed change must be considered first by the Privy Council and approved by the Queen. —London.
