WARNING TO STUDENTS

Traffic Officers On Watch Canterbury University College students in the ’ aHtiuat"~prdb«S'Sion tomorrow morning will have to show more regard for the direction of their missiles and the clothes of the crowd than did some of the entrants in the Avon river bicycle race yesterday. Scooped handfuls of riverbed mud were thrown indiscriminately by some of the contestants. A lot of the mud landed on spectators, making a mess of men’s and women’s clothes. One newspaper photographer was a target, and it was two hours later before the big patch of mud on his trousers was sufficiently dry to be brushed off. In the meantime he had to carry on his work looking as though he had been reporting a flood. Tomorrow, if anything likely to damage the clothing of onlookers is thrown or discharged from floats, City Council traffic officers have authority to remove the floats from the procession immediately. The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) said yesterday that the council had agreed_that the traffic officers would have power to prevent floats from continuing if they caused any trouble. After last year's procession, students had to face some dry-clean-ing bills.
