Basketball MEN’S MATCHES BEGIN

First-round matches of men’s Indoor basketball were held at the Y.M.C.A. hall last evening. The standard did not improve very much on the grading trials last week and play was fairly rough. It was shown that if a high standard is to be produced from the beginning of the year more grading trials should be held before the competition starts. Several teams last evening played their first basketball of the year, showing lack of cohesion and faulty handling. There were numerous fouls.

The best game was that between Y Boys A and Teachers’ College which resulted in a 19-15 victory for Y Boys after a very close struggle. Highest scorer for the evening was I. Francis (University B). who was in excellent form for 25 points. Results were:—University B 36. Rex B 18; University A 18, Rex A 9; Taxes 13, Y Boys B 11; Y Boys A 19, Training College 15: B.G.H. B 22. Rangiora B 4; B.G.H. A 25, Rangiora A 19.
