Syrian Ban On Demonstrations
BEIRUT, May 3. The Syrian President, Mr Shikri El Kuwatly, today banned all demonstrations in four towns where by-elections will be held tomorrow to fill the seats of four Parliamentary deputies sentenced in February on charges of plotting to overthrow the Government. The towns are Damascus, Homs, Sweida and Jebeldruze. Only the first two are strongly contested. Whichever way the elections go, there is no chance whatever of a pro-Western outcome. But the results will be watched with interest as they will provide an indication whether, in the present stage of the Middle East crisis, Syrian political trends favour Left-wingers or support Arab nationalists.
