AIR RECORD ATTEMPT
Canberra Flight To Tokyo
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 6. A R-A.F. Canberra PR7, Aries V, will take off from London on May 23 to try to establish a record for the 16.000 mile flight to Tokyo and back. The Canberra will fly over the Arctic to set a record for the double flight in 32 hours 50 minutes flying time, and a total elapsed time of 38 hours 20 minutes. The average speed on the outward journey is expected to be 464 miles per hour and on the return journey, 510 miles per hour. The purpose of the flight has been officially announced as an investigation of navigational aids and meteorological conditions for aircraft using the northern route to Tokyo But according to the “Daily Herald” the flight is the British Government’s answei to the stiff American competition expected at the Paris Salon, Europe's biggest air show which will open during the Aries flight. It says that the Air Ministry has been told of the new record to give a timely boost to Britain’s air industry.
