MEAT SHIPMENT FOR JAPAN
Meika Maru Loading At Lyttelton
The small Japanese cargo steamer, Meika Maru, now at Lyttelton, will today load the first South Island shipment of frozen meat for Japan. Part of the shipment will consist of boner grade cow beef in quarters. The ship has been chartered to ma'ke two more trips to New Zealand to load meat for Japan. The Meika Maru is a new ship. It was completed at Osaka six months ago. The vessel is of 1179 tons, and was constructed to carry frozen fish from Japan to North America. The Meika Maru has made one trio from Japan with fish for Canada.
Gambler Wounded.— The man who shot and wounded the gambler, Frank Costello, on Thursday, is still at large and “friends” of Costello might get to the man before detectives do. The bullet grazed Costellq’s skull.—New York, May 4. &
