TRAINING SQUAD CHOSEN
Seven players chosen for the New Zealand team last season are among those named for the Canterbury team training Squad by the sole selector, Mr Roger Smith. Training will begin immediately, as Canterbury is to play Wellington in a fortnight, with a match against Wellington on Queen’s Birthday weekend. The following week, the visiting Hong Kong Chinese team will meet Canterbury in the first match of their tour. Those selected for training are:— Technical Old Boys: R. Sanders I. Drewitt E. Fields, D. Charlton; Shamrock: J. Calligan P. Flynn. L. Sanpeterie; Western: M. Shardlow, A. Laffey, J. Durant, C. Steel, P. Saunderson, K. Olley; Nomads: J. Cullen, I. Graham, A. Van Rooyen. p. Rennell; Christchurch City: G. Worthington. Flynn, Charlton, Laffey, Durant, Steel, Van Rooyen, and Olley are all 1956 New Zealand representatives, while Calligan. Cullen, Rennell, Saunderson, and Fields were in Canterbury teams last year. Newcomers are Sanders, a goalkeeper of promise. Shardlow, a member of the 1955 Chatham Cup winning team, and I. Drewitt, who was chosen for trials last year. I. Graham played a good game as centre half for Nomads on Saturday, while Worthington and Sanpeterie are new to Christchurch football, and are both capable inside forwards.
