PARABLE WINS AT LAST

Sprint Event At Forbury Parable, which had been placed in 16 of his previous 25 starts this season, gained a long overdue win by a nose in the Pacific Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. He was in or near the lead ail the way. worked clear with three and a half furlongs to run, and raced to the straight on the inside of Dame Sybil and Rola Veyor, with Welsh Heir, Fiona, Air Command. Scottish Fair, Victory Nelson and Ice Drift next. Parable and Rola Veyor soon shook off Dame Sybil, -and they had a great struggle over the last furlong. Rola Veyor paced a sound race from 36 yards to get second. He was handily placed over the last furlong. Ice Drift finished with a great burst in the straight to finish third, two and a half lengths behind Rola Veyor. and two lengths in front of Scottish Fair, which lost his position with about two furlongs to run when he was squeezed for room on the rails. Fiona, from 36 yards, finished boldly 'for fifth, three lengths in front, of! .Victory Nelson and the hot favourite, Dame Sybil. Welsh Heir was, five lengths away next. Colossal Queen. Responsive and Lady French lost ground early. At Long Odds Jean Able paid the biggest dividend of the meeting when she won the Railway Handicap. She moved up with Native Cord to work clear seven and a half furlongs from the finish. She set a sound pace and (trotted clear Of her field over the final circuit. She was four lengths [in front of Native Cord racing „to I the straight, but three lengths to Serenelli. which was followed by (Diomedes, with a gap to Fifth [Brigade and Nirvana. Jean Able did not look like being caught in the straight and won convincingly by four lengths. Native Cord, which was forced wide early in the race, battled on for second, a length in front of Diomedes, which-was slow away and a long way back shortly after the start. ' Nirvana, which broke several times during the running, got up to take fourth place from Serenelli, with four lengths to Rapuwai and Sword Lass, with a gap to Young Atlas and Fifth Brigade. Fiona in Form Fiona made a long overdue return to winning form in the Southland Handicap. She took the lead at the end of two furlongs and was not afterwards headed. Parable was handy early, but at the end of half a mile he was badly checked. Fiona opened up a lead of three lengths in the back straight, and turned for home four lengths in front of Parable, with Victory Nelson right up next, clear of Upward and Blue Jay. Fiona did not look like being caught and she won, easing up, by four lengths. Parable battled on gamely for second without appearing likely to catch the winner. Victory Nelson was three lengths back third, two lengths in front of Upward, which just beat Stvlish George. Blue Jay and Air Command /were next, clear of Lady French. Responsive and Quite Contrary could not handle the going, and were nulled up. Arriba met trouble twice in the running. Fine Performance

Mulgrove put up an outstanding performance to win the Fairfield Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. He broke at the start and lost about 60 yards. He gradually improved his position until he was at the rear of the bunch with five furlongs to run. M. L. Edwards sent him round the field after passing the half-mile post and he was showing up on the outside of Floreate and Timber Miller, clear of This Time, with Tonga, Vinola’s Luck and General Advance next. Mulgrove took over early in the run home, and he had to be driven hard to win by a General Advance finished brilliantly and may have been a little unlucky. He was jammed for room' inside the furlong and had trouble working clear. Vinola’s Luck finished on from well back to take third place two lengths from General Advance, with four I lengths to Floreate. This Time was ffth, just ahead of Tonga and Timber Miller, with Banquier beaten off next. Wakeful Surprises Wakeful gained her first success since being trained by R. H. Butterick when she caused a minor upset in the Tahuna Handicap. Wakeful was one of the leaders throughout the race and she turned for home on the inside of Te Waihopi Indianna arid Native Cord, which were almost in line. Wakeful broke for a stride or two Just inside the furlong, but settled down immediately. She fought on gamely and won well by ’ Native’cord. which start'd from 4S yards, finished strongly wide out on the track, but he could not catch th winner. Ke was well back mast of the way and did well to finish secon inrtianna. the favourite, trotted her usual honest race for third.
