TROTTING Dresden Lady Gains Good Win At Forbury
Dresden Lady won her third race of the season for her Rakaia breeder, Mr J. Langley, when she outclassed the field in the Queen’s Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double on the second day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The Light Brigade mare handled the heavy track better than any of her opponents and after being a clear leader over the last nine furlongs won with something in hand. /
Dresden Lady was driven by I D. D. Nyhan, a son of her trainer D. G. Nyhan. Nyhan junior drove! Dresden Lady when she won the Autumn Stakes at Addington on April 20. She raced poorly on the first day of the meeting and she was not dangerous in two appearances.
Dresden Lady was bracketed with Ricochet on Saturday, but he was never a possibility. The second horse, La Mignon, had every chance and was clear of Direct Hall. La Mignon was driven by M. L. Edwards, who’ drove Mulgrove to win the Fairfield Handicap earlier in the day. The second leg of the double, the Peninsula Handicap, was won most impressively by Fourth Edition, which was also a winner on the first day of the meeting. He lost 60 yards at the start, and broke with nine furlongs to run, after which his task looked hopeless. However, he gradually improved his position and won with a lot in hand.
The Dresden Lady (bracketed with Ricochet)—Fourth Edition doubles combination returned £52 19s for £l.
The meeting was held in fine but cold weather before a good attendance. The track was very heavy. Totalisator investments amounted to £76.620 15s, including £7317 15s on the double, compared with £81,850 5s last year. The total for the two days was £148,945 15s, compared with £164,102 ss. Queen’s Handicap Dresden Lady made practically all the pace in the Queen’s Handicap, and she came on to win with something in hand. She was a clear leader at the end of half a mile, with Count Grattan, Ricochet, Cembala, Direct Hall, La Mignon, Super Royal, High-
land Air and Don Hall all handy. Dresden Lady was still pacing comfortably racing to the straight, with Count Grattan. Cembala. La Mignon, Light Nurse, Direct Hall. Ricochet, Invicta and Marshall Foi next. Dresden Lady did not look like surrendering her lead and she won impressively by two lengths and a half. La Mignon received a good run all the way, and she made up some ground in the straight for second, two lengths in front of Direct Hall, which lost ground when he broke at the start. Cembala, which was always well up, battled on for fourth a length behind. Direct Hall, with Highland Air a fair fifth, clear of Count Grattan, with a gap to Light Nurse, and another to Ricochet. Light Nurse, Super Royal, Te Koi and Marshall Foi were slow early. Second Leg Fourth Edition looked to have lost all chance when he was very slow at the start of the second leg of the double, the Peninsula Handicap; but he gradually improved his position and won most decisively. Golden Hero and Quite Probable forced most of the pace, but both were well beaten with more than two furlongs to run, Lord Balfour moving through to the lead. He was followed by Aksarben racing to the straight, with En Avant, Fourth Edition, which was improving his position, Quite Probable, Girl Brigade, Golden Hero and Amazon next. Aksarben was clear inside the furlong, but Fourth Edition soon raced past him and won with plenty to spare. Aksarben, after having difficulty in handling the going, held on for second, two lengths in front of Amazon, which finished fast over the last furlong. Girl Brigade was half a length back fourth, ahead of Vanity Scott, with a gap to Lord Balfour and another to En Avant. . East Dome, Next Time, Crimson Star and Friendly Hall were veryslow early. Paia Royal Wins
The Oamaru-owned and trained Paia Royal gained his first win for the season when he finished too well for his opponents in the Farewell Handicap. He was m fourth place until about two and a half furlongs from home, when he was rushed through to the front. He led Dresden Lady by three lengths turning for home, with Light Nurse, Spring Walk and Count Grattan handiest of the others. Paia Royal handled the heavy track too well for his rivals, [and he was not seriously tested to win by two and a half lengths. Light Nurse moved up to second [place wide out with five furlongs ! to run. She finished on gamely in the straight to take second place a nose in front of Dresden Lady, which broke at the start and lost a probable winning chance. Her placing was full of merit, and she [raced right up to her effort Ox learlier in the day.
Spring Walk, after forcing most of the pace, held on for fourth, but she was three lengths from Dresden Lady. Count Grattan was a similar distance back next, clear of Direct Hall, Scottish Brigade and Cembala. Results:— TAHUNA HANDICAP, Of £44)0. Trotters. 3min 53sec class.
