(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LOUISVILLE (Kentucky). May 4. In a photo-finish Iron Liege today won the Kentucky Derby, the premier classic of the American Turf.
The Irish-bred Gallant Man was second and Round Table third.
The winner's time for the mile and a quarter race was 2min 2.2sec—only four-fifths of a second outside the track record set by Whirlaway. Nine horses started in the 153,000dollar (£54,750) event after Iron Liege's fancied stablemate, General Duke, was withdrawn because of a foot injury. Iron Liege Is owned by the Calumet Farm.
