WAIKATO HURDLES TO MILLION DOLLAR

“The Press” Special Service

HAMILTON, May 5. The winter jumping season in the Auckland district was opened on Saturday, when the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s three-day meeting was held in showery weather before a large crowd. The track was in good order early, but softer later. The double, which was conducted on the two principal flat events, was won by Straight Lead and Gay Sailor, and paid £lOB 12s 6d for £l. The totalisator on-course handled, £75,168, including £12,632 on the doubles. A determined finish past the tiring pacemaker, Hickory Stick, brought Million Dollar the honours by a length and a quarter in the Waikato Hurdles. Hickory Stick tried to win all the way. Coming to the last jump he was all but spent. Million Dollar then tackled him, and when they had gone another 50 yards or so he had the issue wel> in hand. Swift Gold was the best after the first two, and he finished four lengths behind Hickory Stick. Million Dollar comes from Foxton, where he is trained by his owner, Mr K. Carter. His best effort before Saturday was when he won the Karere Hurdles, at Awapuni, on March 30. Besides the Waikato Hurdles, he won the Waverley Steeplechase on April 13. He has also raced well on the flat recently. It will be surpiising if there is not more in store for Million Dollar, because he is thoroughly seasoned and ready for winter racing. He is an interesting entrant for the big jumping events at Ellerslie next month, having been entered for the Great Northern Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeplechase. Straight Lead won narrowly in the first leg, the Hamilton Handicap. It was his second good handicap win in a month, and in between he was unluckily beaten in a mile and three furlongs at Ellerslie.
