WORRELL MAKES, 107

West Indies Well Placed

(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. IAS p.m.) LONDON, May 4. An unbeaten 107 by Frank Worrell put the West Indies in a strong position after a bad start in its match with Northamptonshire today. West Indies had scored seven for 328 at stumps.

Worrell batted for 195 minutes and hit 18 boundaries, after being missed off a difficult return catch by George ,Tribe when he had scored seven.

His assistance came primarily from the opening bat, Nyron Asgarali, who made 86, including a five and 14 fours, in a stay of 160 minutes, and Everton Weekes, whose 81, including 13 fours, occupied 170 minutes. Together, this pair put on 135 in 120 minutes for the third wicket. Asgarali showed splendid form and subtantially eased the tourists’ worries about their early batting. A stocky, efficient player, he has a solid defence, but uses his feet well to spin bowlers. Worrell and Weekes figured in a stand of 47. but after Weekes had edged a catch to slip, Worrell cut loose, and with Sobers (36) backing him up, put on 109 for the fifth wicket.

Worrell’s innings, apart from the one chance, was a masterpiece, and he did not look to be in the slightest trouble.

He was more delicate in his approach than Weekes, but was no less effective, and charmed the crowd with his neat stroke play—in particular his very late cuts.

Sobers showed a good, flashing cover-drive, and his defence looked safe.
