PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL

Development Plan Urged

“A development plan for the Papanui High School is needed for it is in an expanding district.” said the newly-elected chairman 'Mr R. H McDonald) at vesterday’s board meeting. “On-the-spot discussion with the Education Department’s architect should be held as soon as possible,” he said.

The further development was necessary to give proper facilities in all departments, said Mr McDonald. He believed that pressure would remain on the Papanui High School until another school was built in the area and that the present school should make facilities for further pupils. “The immediate problem Is the replacement of temporary buildings at the school,” said Mr S G. Farquhar. Mr F. L. Drury said he though! the Education Denartment had shown expansion was necessary in the homecraft and home science facilities. “The board should not give up this matter easily,” said Mr McDonald, commenting on the Education Department’s refusal to rebuild the school workshops so that the present block could be used for laboratories. The board decided to request on-the-spot discussions with the Education Department’s architect to decide on a plan for future development. Assembly Hall Whether the new assembly hall should be equipped with emergency lighting to meet the requirements for public entertainment was discussed. Mr Drury asked whether the hall would be used b - the public at all. and he was told that the use was a matter for the board’s discretion but that if it was used for this purpose the cost of meeting local safety requirements must be met by the school. . Mr Drury was instructed to find out what the local body safety requirements were. The Parent-Teacher Association planned to build a lunch room, 26 feet by 10 feet, it was reported. Allowance for a 10foot expansion into a cafeteria had been made and the association .hoped to raise funds by noninterest debentures. Mr McDonald became chairman at the meeting on the retirement of Mr Drury, who had been chairman for three years.
