Fall In Race At Albury (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 2. A veteran New South Wales jockey, Maurice Gray, 43, died in Albury Hospital today from injuries received in a fall during the Albury Gold Cup yesterday. The Melbourne rider, Douglas Barclay, died last night from a fractured skull and a fractured neck suffered in the same falL

Ivan Spalding, not long out of his apprenticeship, is still in hospital with a fractured skull, but it is believed he will recover.

The fall occurred at the sixfurlong post when Barclay’s mount, Bow Royal, went down and horses ridden by Gray and Spalding crashed over her.

Gray broke his neck. The fall was one of the worst seen in years in Australian racing. Spalding’s mount, Toolabar, broke its neck and died instantly. Bold Silhouette, ridden by Gray, slipped a hip, and might have to be destroyed. Gray had ridden more than 1000 winners in his 20 years of riding. He restricted his riding mainly to the Riverina and north-eastern

Victoria, and has not ridden much on metropolitan tracks. The Albury stipendiary stewards have opened an inquiry into the fall.
