SHEEP DOG TRIALS

Better Conditions At Waikari

Conditions were much more favourable for the second day of the Canterbury provincial sheep dog trial championships held at Waikari yesterday. The run-off events for the hunt-away-with-slew and heading events were held early in the day and the yarding and straight huntaway events were begun. Mr E. Brown’s Lomond won the Canterbury hunt-away-with-slew championship and the heading was won by Mr R. Wilson’s Trump. The judge of the heading event (Mr J. Fulton, of Loburn) said the standard of the trial had been poor throughout. Most of the dogs had spoilt their performances by their out-runs. Mr dog had had a particularly good run and his performance was spoilt only .by some minor mistakes. He was awarded 97 points in the run-off, three points more than Mr H. inch’s Speed. The sheep in general worked well but a heavy cover of long grass on the course tended to make them jump. The first four placed dogs had amazingly good out-runs, Mr Fulton said, and each was awarded full points for that part of the run. Huntaway with Slew The more favourable conditions yesterday allowed for work of a good standard in the huntaway championship. said the judge (Mr H. Roxburgh, of Waiau), and the six dogs in the run-off were typical of the best huntaway standard. A pleasing feature of the trial was that the champion dog was owned by a musterer, Mr E. Brown. The dog, Lomond, put up a very creditable performance to take the championship from Mr J. Petrie’s Doctor, another good performer. Lomond had plenty of time to spare in both runs, but three other dogs failed to complete the course. The sheep were better yesterday than on the first dry, but excessive noise hampered the getting away of some dogs, he said. Results were:— PROVINCIAL Huntaway E. Brown’s Lomond, 192 J points, 1; J.
