NORTH AMERICAN GOODS FOR N.Z.

Rise In Freights Criticised

(New Zealand Press Association) - AUCKLAND, May 2.

Increased freight rates between the United States and Canada and New Zealand from May 1 threatened to price Canadian goods out of traditional markets in New Zealand, said Mr A. G. Wilson at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce today. x The increased rates applied to Pacific as well as eastern Atlantic ports, he said. The shipping companies were shortsighted in their policy. They would not be able to keep their present traffic if they raised their rates so high that exports from North America became almost impossible. ,' , ~ Mr Wilson said that under the new rates, the freight on one Canadian product would be £l6 9s Bd, compared with a freight of £9 5s from a United Kingdom port. For another item the freight from Canada was £lB 19s. compared with £ll 5s from the United Kingdom. The council decided to ask the Associated Chambers to make representations for the retention of the old rates.
