Queensland Politics
Sir, —The recent expulsion of Mr Gair from his party raises a wider and more. important issue than those touched on in your editorial. Subservience to party doctrine is not confined to Labour parties: it is probably a feature of most organised political groups. It results in our politicians holding. and sometimes expressing, a public and a private opinion, which may not. coincide, and may indeed be diametrically opposed. This system leads to political stability, but does this stability compensate for the consequent weakening of moral fibre of our politicians. It should be the right and dirty of our politicians to act as their conscience directs them Nor should this maxim apply to them alone. All those who form and sway public opinion should be guided by it. and our democracy will thereby be stronger and more influential. For what is democracy but this very right?— Yours, etc..
