Unlawful Arrest Damages
(N.Z. Press Association Copyright! LONDON, May 2.
A South African lawyer has accepted an offer of £1250 in his action for £20,000 damages for unlawful arrest against Major A. T. Spengler, of the South African Police and the South African Justice Minister (Mr C. R. Swart). “The Times” reported. The lawyer, Mr John Lang, was held for three days’ interrogation at the Special Branch headquarters in Johannesburg last August under suspicion of being connected with broadcasts by the secret “freedom radio” in South Africa. The defendant admitted the arrest was unlawful because it had been made without a warrant, ‘The Times” said.
Mr Lang earlier refused an offer of a total of £650 damages in settlement of his claims. His counsel then announced in Court that Mr Lang would accept the increased offer of £1250 plus costs.
