Attractive Entrance Of Villa Maria Debutantes

A novel feature of the presentation of the 13 debutantes at the Villa Maria Old Girls’ Association Ball held in the Winter Garden last evening, was the appearance of each deubtante accompanied by her partner along a tree-lined path through a miniature garden. She was then escorted through an open gateway, where she paused momentarily before advancing into the ballroom.

Instead of posies, the debutantes carried Continental hand-painted silk tissue and sandal wood fans, a gift from the association. After the presentation, each girl and her partner danced to the “White Waltz,” specially composed by Mrs W. Wilson, who also trained the debutantes. Guests Specially invited guests included Bishop Joyce, Monsignor Kennedy, the Rev. Fathers T. Liddy, G. Kane, and T. Hanrahan, chaplain to the association. Guests also included representatives of the following kindred associations: Dominican College, St. Mary’s College, Alumnae of the Sacred Heart, St. Bede’s College, Sacred Heart Past Pupils’ Association, Otago Girls’ High School, Nelson Girls’ College, Southland Girls’ High School, Te Wai Pounamu, St. Margaret’s College, and the Villa Maria Parent-Teachers’ Association. About 300 attended the ball. Debutantes were presented to Bishop Joyce by the president (Mrs M. T. Bunting). Mrs Bunting wore a hibiscus faille gown with a bouffant skirt The 4?aped neckline was caught

on one side with a diamante clasp, finishing in a bow. A stole of matching material was lined with a kingfisher-blue material. A figured teal nylon frock with a full skirt was worn by Mrs P. Howard, the vice-president. ’Hie neckline was folded into a fitting bodice, and she had a white and silver-threaded stole. Mrs P. J. Keenan, the secretary, wore a ballerina-length frock of heavy turquoise lace with a portrait neckline and sleeves worked into the fitting bodice. The bouffant skirt was finished with a matching satin cumberband. Debutantes’ Frocks An unusual design of satin draped across the front of the skirt and caught at the back with white roses, was worn by two debutantes. Most of the debutantes chose bouffant skirts, some of them from a lowered waistline. Decorations in the hall, lounge and supper room were mainly bowls of autumn foliage, ferns and berries. The debutantes were: Misses Annette Brown, Denise Callanan, Marie Croft, Diana Curry, Alison Daly, Joan Hardie, Denise Lattimore, Mary McGuiness, Heather Mackintosh, Marie O’Halloran, Judith Reynolds, Judith Slattery and Margaret Wilson. The committee responsible for arranging the ball was: Mesdames M. Bunting, K. Power, P. Howard, P. J. Keenan, V. Kavanagh, A. O’Brien. Misses C. M. Ive, M. Ward, M. Steele, A. Meikle, B. Twoomey, C.
