SOILS COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
Mr W. L. Newnham To Retire
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2. The retirement of the chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, Mr W. L. Newnham, was announced tonight by the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman). As the first chairman of the council, Mr Newnham had given outstanding service, said Mr Goosman. He was retiring at his own request. His services to New Zealand had been long and distinguished. He was a former Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, and had served on many national organisations.
The appointment of a former Commissioner of Works (Mr E. R McKillop) as the new chairman of the council was announced in a Gazette tonight. The council ends its current term on July 7, and in addition to Mr Newnham, several other members will be retiring. New members are to be nominated by the national organisations represented on the council.
The white hart, poised on top of the New Plymouth hotel of that name, looks strangely naked. It has lost its antlers as a result of an Anzac Day prank. A joke, said the licensee of the White Hart Hotel, Mr M. J. Outred, “but a rather expensive joke. It will take considerable trouble to put them back.” They were real antlers painted white and they were broken while being moved, “but they will be put back.” said Mr Outred.
