Sudden Death Of Little River Man

An elderly man collapsed and died at Little River, near the Post Office, at 9.45 a.m. yesterday.

He was James Ryder Wheeler, a retired single man, aged 70. of Little River.

When Constable A. Cromie, of Little River, arrived five minutes later Mr Wheeler was already dead.

An inquest will be opened in Christchurch today. A well-known local identity, Mr Wheeler, who lived in a hut in the township, was supposed to have been born at sea. For some years he owned and operated fishing boats at Sumner and Port Levy. No relatives are known, and in accordance with his often expressed wish Mr Wheeler will be buried in the Little River Maori cemetery.
