Pilot Bails Out On Ground
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, May 1.
An R.A.F. pilot has saved his life by baling out from the ground. He is the first man to make emergency use of the ejector seat apparatus which can be used at ground level. It happened at the North Weald R.A.F. station during a flying display when the pilot was bringing an aircraft to land. After landing, he went through a boundary fence into a ploughed field. Half-way across he ejected himself and landed by parachute. The aircraft caught fire;
The ejector seat shot the pilot 80ft to 100 ft into the air, at which point his parachute opened. He suffered serious injuries, however, to his spine and face.
Wage Rise for Pilots.— Pilots employed by Ansett ler Air Transport, and three other small airlines will receive this week pay rises ranging from £4O to £2OO a year. The rises are retrospective to February I.—Melbourne. May 2.
