CHILD DROWNED

Found In Water Race

A small child was found wedged in an iron grille in a water race at Sheffield at 11.40 a.m. yesterday. She was:

Donna Fraser, aged 3$ years, the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs G. L. Fraser, of Sheffield. The child was last seen by her mother at 11.15 a.m. When she was found by a neighbour. Dr J. A. Avery, of Darfield, was called. Artificial resuscitation was applied for one hour and 20 minutes until the arrival of an ambulance. During the trip to the Christchurch Public Hospital oxygen was administered, and resuscitation was continued, but the child was found to be dead on arrival.

The child had been in the habit of playing with children living on the other side of the water race. It is thought that she slipped from a plank crossing the race, which is about 18 inches deep, but unusually swift-flowing The plank, which is about 100 yards upstream from the grille, has a hand-wire above it, but th? wire is too high for a small child to reach.

An inquest will be opened before the Coroner (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) this morning.
