PORT EXTENSION BEGUN
Building Of Quarry Road “The quarry road is virtually part of the breakwater and, if you put it that way. you can say the building of the breakwater has begun,” the engineer-in-chief (Mr J. A. Cashin) told the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Mr J. Brand asked when the engineer would be ready to begin work on the breakwater as part of the major port extension scheme. Was he to begin building the breakwater out from Sticking Point in the immediate future? Mr Cashin: Yes.
A modified blasting technique had been adopted in an attempt to obtain larger facing stones for the seaward slope, said Mr Cashin. Under the supervision of an engineer from the Otago School of Mines, 14 holes to a depth of 53 feet were drilled, loaded and fired, bringing out some 2500 cubic yards of stone. The stone was apparently larger than that previously obtained. An inspection revealed cracks in a tall rock scarp overhanging the road and from which it was understood a fall of rock occurred 12 years ago. That would be cleaned up to allow the placing of stone to proceed.
