POLICE STATION FOR TIMARU
Tenders To Be Called In October
(New Zealand Press Association} TIMARU, May 1.
Tenders for Timaru’s new police station will be called in October this year—nearly 30 years after the project was originally placed on the priority list.
This was announced this morning by the recently-appointed Minister of Police, Mr D. J. Eyre, when he paid a brief courtesy call on Inspector J. M. McKie. The Minister could give no firm date for the start of demolition work on the old building, but said the matter would receive immediate attention.
“Five new police stations have been approved for this year, and Timaru is definitely included,’ said the Minister.
‘‘Detailed plans and specification for the new Lower Hutt station have been adopted and tenders for this work and the Timaru contract will be called about the same time in October.”
The Minister explained that the Lower Hutt building was to be the prototype for future police stations throughout New Zealand. ‘‘Timaru’s new station will be very similar to that in Lower Hutt,” said the Minister.
‘‘The building, will be designed to provide every facility for effective, efficient administration of modern police wdrk. For example, the police barracks, cells, administration offices, interviewing rooms, etc., will all be housed under one roof.” The Minister left Timaru this morning for the Hermitage, Mount Cook. In his capacity as Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts, Mr Eyre will consider 'on the spot the proposed extensions and renovations for the Hermitage.
Export of Snails. —The Greek Minister of Trade extended for three months export licences for the shipment to France of 10 tons of snails because of the delay of the wet season in Greece, which marks the general exit of snails from their well-concealed shelters. The continuing dry weather has prevented Greek snail-collec-tors gathering a sufficient quantity to complete the order which is provided for by an existing Greek-French agreement.—Athens (Reuter).
