POOR CONDITION OF SALMON
Investigation By Society
The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society is to request permission from the South Island Salmon Committee to send specimens of salmon to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in an endeavour to ascertain the reasons for the poor condition of the fish this season. This was decided at a meeting of the society on Tuesday evening. Salmon had increased tremendously over the last few years with a natural lessening of the size of the fish, said the secretaty of the society (Mr J. B. Nicoll) yesterday. However, for some unknown reason, the size and condition of the fish had deteriorated still further this season, he said. A survey of the salmon spawning area in the. Upper Rakaia was made last year, and it was decided that a further survey should be made this year if possible, for the purpose of comparison. It is hoped that a survey of thfe spawning urn in th© Upper Mffhgit&u wul abo b« made this year-
