ANIMOSITY TO REFEREES
Transvaal Union’s Discussion (NZ. Press Association—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. April 30 Fear of serious animosity to referees, especially in view of the New Zealand tour ir 1960. has caused the Transvaal Rugby Union to consider scrapping its senior competition. The proposal was not put to the vote at the union committee meeting last night because of the president’s absence. A committee man, Mr R. J. N. Britz, said in the discussion: “We have to entertain tne All Blacks in 1960. but what is going to happen ff this hostility ou and off the field toward referees is not stopped? “It could lead to serious trouble in 1960. We must support the referees ©r the game will die.” Mr Charles Newham, another member of the committee, said - “Certain referees play too strictly to the rules and never think of applying an advantage rule. Players will open up if given a chance.” Mr Jack Kipling, a former Springbok, quoted the British example where no League was played and added: “The result is grand foot- . ball.”
