U.K. GUIDED MISSILES

Export Sales Permitted

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON May 1 Britain’s guided missiles are to be offered for export, newspapers reported today. After many months of pressure by the aircraft industry, the Government had agreed to the sale of secret models to specified friendly countries.

Two would be the ground-to-air Bristol Bloodhound ram-jet missile and the even more secret English Electric guided weapon, the “Daily Mail” said. The “Daily Telegraph” said the Fairey Fireflash air-to-air rocket would also be included. The concession comes at a time when the Americans are about to launch a powerful campaign to persuade N.A.T.O. countries to buy their Nike, Terrier and Talos weapons, the “Daily Mail” said. Both Bristols and English Electric planned to start a vigorous sales drive at the Paris air show this month.

Although the Americans were ahead of Britain on guided weapons generally, the British missiles had been designed to fit into the general N.A.T.O. earlywarning system, the “Daily Mail” added. The American article was not, and any country buying it would have to buy the radar system with it.
