COOK STRAIT AIR SERVICE
Full Operation Not Yet Practicable (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 30 The Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand) said tonight that he did not believe commercial aviation was yet capable of fully replacing the Cook Strait ferry services. It might be ready to do so in three to four years. Mr Shand said he considered no transport system should be allowed to destroy another till it was capable of replacing it. Answering a question concerning the operation of Straits Air Freight Express, which operates under a Railways Department licence. Mr Shand said the ratio of Civil Aviation Administration and airport costs incurred in this service, as opposed to the dues the company paid, was such that S.A.F.E. operated without subsidy.
