Orders Placed For New Frigates
The Royal New Zealand Navy’s two Whitby-class frigates will be built in yards little more than an hour’s ferry trip apart. The Admiralty, acting for the New Zealand Government, has placed an order for one with Messrs J. 1Thomycroft, at Southampton, and the other with Messrs J. S. White, at Cowes in the Isle of Wight. It is expected that the frigates *‘ill be launched in October and December. 1958. It will take approximately a year to fit them out and they are expected to commission and sail for New Zealand in mid-1960. The Admiralty overseer at Messrs J. S. White’s yard is Commander F. S. Ferguson. R.N., who £as on loan to the Royal New Zealand Navy as Director of Naval Engineering and Equipment from 1951 to 1954.
