Pylons Carried By Road
Sir, —I read with amazemept the remarks of Mr A. C. R. Robinson, reported in “The Press” on April 26. A frequent traveller on the Main North road, I, too, have seen heavily-laden trucks each carrying parts for a complete pylon to its ultimate destination. This material has been sorted in the Christchurch yard and from there it is carried to the site in one handling. To move this material by rail would involve two extra handlings and one extra sorting, all at the public expense. It is encouraging to note that one member of Federated Farmers had the perspicacity to make this point himself. Would it not be more appropriate for Mr Robinson and his colleagues to draw the attention of the Minister of Transport to the numbers of farmers’ trucks carrying loads (or overloads) of wool, and to the corresponding loss of revenue to the railways? Do these vehicles escape his notice?—Yours, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. April 30, 1957.
