Psychiatric Services

Sir, —On inquiry I find that Queen Mary’s Hospital at Hanmer the Government about £150,000 per annum. The Minister of Health is in favour of more such institutions. Would it not be better to adopt the method of an earlier school of psychiatrics? A certain number of picked (efficient) men were sent out with equipment to deal with the effects of uncontrolled feelings and emotions. They were advised as follows: “And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart out of that home or city, shake off the dust of your feet,” etc. Surely this is a better method. If, after a full explanation as to the cause of the mental trouble, the patient rejects the advice, the Government should no longer be responsible.— Yours, etc., PAUL. April 30, 1957.
