Lake Sumner
Sir, —So the Lake Sumner Association has “agreed” to the Lands Department’s circular! I received one and would like to know, first, as the land is, presumably, controlled by the Lands Department why has the association to “agree”? Second, the association does not favour £lOO deposit! Only persons wishing to build will be interested (doubtless decent building standards will be insisted/upon). Building will cost hundreds, so if some find £lOO excessive how could they hope to build? Third, new roading may cost £35,000 in taxpayers’ money which, naturally, should be recovered promptly. Is my assumption correct that improvements to the existing access rqad, costing many more thousands, will be financed by the Government 'and the cost be irrecoverable? If so. the long-suffering taxpayer will subsidise the subdivision sufficiently, without the association protesting about the suggested method of recoving the £35,000. Let the Crown manage its own affairs.—Yours, etc., PARADISE LOST.
April 22, 1957. [The District Commissioner of Works (Mr A. E. Clark), to whom this letter was referred, said the result of representations by interested parties to the Government for assistance toward the cost of improving the road to Lake Taylor was not yet known.]
