KICK INTO TOUCH
Rule Possible In N.Z.
If the kick-into-touch rule as played in Australia and in the trial matches already seen in Christchurch, is considered of value to Rugby in New Zealand, there is every chance that the dispensation already enjoyed in Australia may also be sought by the New Zealand Rugby Union. This was disclosed during a discussion on the rule at a meeting of the Canterbury Union’s management committee last evening. The committee had before it a letter from the New Zealand union advising that the rule would apply to the All Black-Canterbury match to be played at Christchurch on June 29 upon the return of the New Zealand team from Australia.
The match would be an important one for Canterbury, but the team would not be as well acquainted with the law as the All Blacks, said Mr V. L. Jensen. Mr P. V. H. Maxwell agreed with this and asked why the rule could not be applied in Canterbury now so that players would have had some experience of it by the time the match was played. The reason the New Zealand union wanted the game played under the rule on this occasion was to assess its value after the All Blacks had played under it on their tour, said Mr R. R. Masters. Mr Jensen then suggested that the union should make an immediate move to have the dispensation apply in Canterbury until June 29.
“We are going to be at sixes and sevens if one section is going to play under the international ’ rule and the other under this one,” said Mr J. Storey. - “Is it the-ultimate hope of the New Zealand union to come back to the old kick into touch rule?” asked Mr S. W. Whiteford. “I gathered from delegates at the referees’ conference that some of the higher-ups of the New Zealand union are going to attend this match to see if it is worthwhile bringing the old rule back again.” “After the team comes back from Australia, the New Zealand union will have discussions on the rule and then if it thinks it worthwhile it will ask for a dispensation to play it in New Zealand,” said Mr W. C. Dailey. Mr H. C. Blazey said that the New Zealand Rugby council would come to Christchurch to see the match being played under the rule. i The meeting then agreed to the New Zealand union’s request. MORE GOAL POSTS Applications from the Gilberthorpe School Committee, Hornby, and the Freeville School Committee, New Brighton, for new sets of goal posts were approved. Both are now schools. The former All Black, R. W. H. Scott, advised that on Sunday he would lead a team in a match against a combined Petone-Univer-sity team at Petone to raise funds for the two teams’ gymnasiums. He requested the union’s permission to approach notable Canterbury players to play in the match after the 1957 New Zealand team was announced on Saturday evening. The union will advise him that it has no objection. The Albion club wrote that after further consideration it had decided to maintain Beckenham Park as its ground for this season and sought financial assistance from the union to cover the cost of a line-marking machine. Its request was referred to the finance committee. THE SCULLION PASS Mr D. F. Farmer, a Rugby enthusiast, of Stokes Valley. Lower Hutt, wrote that he had seen the Wellington half-back, A. J. Makeham, using the long half-back’s pass originated by W. Scullion and considered the technique an asset to Rugby. He advised that Mr Scullion was willing to make a trip to Christchurch to demonstrate the pass. The letter was referred to the senior selectors for comment. Several members reported on the matches played at Athletic Park on Saturday for the first time, and several improvements at the nark were suggested. These included the selling of programmes, the use of a scoreboard, the provision of three balls, padding around the base of the new goal posts when they are erected, and other minor improvements _ ~ The secretary (Mr A. % C. Felton) reported that only the University club was in favour of a president's grade. “Then it looks like a wash-out for 1957,” said the president (Mr R. W. Blazey).
