FEDERAL TAX

Challenge By States (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 30 The New South Wales and Victorian State Governments yesterday began their legal fight to levy their own income tax. In the Full High Court they are challenging the validity of uniform taxation, tne present system in which Australians pay income tax direct to the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth has received all taxation on income since the uniform system was introduced in 1942. Victoria and New South Wales claim that the Commonwealth, since 1942, has not distributed tax reimbursements among the States in proportion to ihe population of each State. They also claim that the reimbursements are not in the same proportion as in the amounts of income tax the Commonwealth has collected in each State. Seven Judges are hearing the challenge.
