NEW LOCOMOTIVE DELIVERED

Use On Main Trunk Line

(New Zealand Press Association) . ' AUCKLAND, April 30. ‘Gleaming red with streamlined silver trimmings, the first of the Australian-built diesel-electric locomotives for the Main Trunk line was handed over to the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) by the Senior Australian Trade Commissioner (Mr W. R. Hudspeth) at the Auckland railway station today. “The rapid changeover from steam to diesel-electric and dieselhydraulic locomotives that is taking place all over the world,” said Mr Hudspeth, “is nothing short of astounding. It is caused by the proved fact that the direct and indirect savings completely pay for the locomotives in two to three years. This particular locomotive, costing about £700.000, is the first of 10 being built by the Clyde Engineering Company to be delivered.” After receiving the engine the Minister climbed aboard and drove a trainload of officials on a circuit of the line.
