LAKE ELLESMERE OUTLET
Opening Deferred If the fine weather continued, it was most unlikely that the opening of Lake Ellesmere to the sea would take place until the middle of next week, said Mr W. W. Brough, secretary of the North Canterbury Catchment Board, yesterday. “The board has no wish to interfere with the shooting at the lake, but it has an obligation to the ratepayers in the area to open the lake when it is at the agreed level of 3.7 feet,” said Mr Brough. Gauges round the lake were at the 3.4 feet mark, and even if the outlet was made in the middle of next week, several days would pass before the effects of the opening were felt, he said.
