BULLER HOSPITAL IMPROVEMENTS
Report On Food Poisoning The Health Department will give advice on improvements to the kitchen arrangements at the Buller Hospital, Westport, at the request of the medical superintendent (Dr. F. S. Gregory). After making a survey at the ‘hospital, the department will advise on dishwashing arrangements, food storage, the laundering of staff clothing, head covering, and hand washing. The request was included in a report on cases of food poisoning at the hospital on April 8. ’ said the District Medical Officer of Health (Dr. A. Douglas) in Christchurch yesterday. The report said that the poisoning of 45 patients and staff had been caused by a staphylococcal toxin in corned beef. The meat had apparently been infected after it had been received at the hospital. It had been received on April 5, cooked, and stored until April 8. Only two persons who had eaten the beef were not affected.
