AVON RIVER WEIR
Recommendation For Retention
The weir in the Avon river at Medway street, Dallington, should be retained, the works committee recommended to the City Council last evening. It proposed that protective fences should be improved to prevent any children from entering the river near the weir. The committee was reporting on a petition signed by 57 residents of the Avonside district deploring the council’s decision to remove the weir, which they said had greatly improved the river and the whole of Avonside drive. Its removal would affect the values of properties and the general appearance of the district. The council deferred action on the committee’s report. Removal of the weir was sought in a petition to the Drainage Board last year after the drowning of a second child. The council decided later that the weir should be removed, and that rowing clubs, who protested at the time, would have to move to Kerrs, reach. “I am surprised to see this,” said Cr. H. P. Smith, “for I understood that there were to be discussions with the Drainage Board, and technical experts. I think it should be left over until that meeting.” “If the weir is not doing any harm, let it stop there,” said Cr. W. P. Glue. Cr. J. Mathison, M.P., suggested that the recommendation was out of order, as a previous decision of the council was to await a report from the Drainage Board. Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the works committee, said: “We will hold it over, but don’t think we are going to change our opinion.”
