VISIT BY ROYAL NAVY FRIGATE

A Canterbury naval officer will be aboard the British frigate St. Bride’s Bay when the ship visits Lyttelton next month. He is Lieutenant G. Whittle, an engineer officer who will be doing sea training.

The St. Bride’s Bay was built as a Loch class ship with New Zealand’s four frigates. It was designed for anti-aircraft work while the Dominion’s ships were made for an anti-submarine role. The St. Bride’s Bay is scheduled to berth at Lyttelton at 2.30 p.m. on May 14, and sail at 9.30 a.m. on May 16. The ship will remain in port during the informal visit and there will be no exercises with units of the New Zealand Navy. Aboard the frigate will be 20 men of the Wellington division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve. They will embark at Wellington and leave the ship when it returns there after leaving Lyttelton.
