CURRENT NOTES
In recognition of their services to the Friends of St. George’s Hospital Society, the following members were made honorary life members at the annual meeting yesterday: Miss A. Bowker, Mesdames J. Crawshaw’, J. Fleming. S. Hawkins, L. Pigeon, W. H. Meddings, W. Webley, V. Winchester and G. H. Waller.
At a private dance given by the Rev. and Mrs David Thorpe, of St. John’s, Latimer square, nearly 200 guests celebrated a double occasion—the debut of their daughter, Diana, and the coming of age of their son, Julian. The debutante of the evening wore an attractive dress of ivory brocaded taffeta and carried a Victorian posy. Special features of the decorations were the tastefully arranged flowers in shadow boxes in the alcoves, the festoons of ivy, and large bowls of chrysanthemums and ornamental corn and holly in the lounge. A talk on intellectually handicapped children was given by Mrs Rowe at the monthly meeting of the Linwood Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs Lamont presided. A demonstration of shadow embroidery was given by Mrs Woodcock at a recent meeting of the arts and crafts circle. Mrs Quarrell spoke on dahlia culture. Competition winners were as follows: large bloom. Mrs Brian; small bloom. Mrs Shanks; decorative vase, Mrs Rainbow; decorative pad, Mrs Moss. The Bryndwr League of Mothers’ fifth birthday party was held recently when a programme was presented by members of the choir and drama group of the St. Albans branch. The president (Mrs O. Mitchell) welcomed visitors and presented Mrs McFadden, the provincial president, with a bouquet. An admission service was conducted by Mrs McFadden when six new members were added to the roll. Mrs McFadden gave a brief talk on the origin of the League of Mothers in New Zealand. The birthday cake was cut and supper was served by members of the committee.
The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Friends of St. George’s Hospital Society: president, Mrs J. Williams; secretary, Mrs F. Hiatt; treasurer, Miss A. M. Black; vice-presidents; Mesdames R. J. G. Collins, B. M. Field, R. King. J. Guilliam. J. Mantell, A. Morton, A. M. Hadfield, A. K. Hadfield, I. Woolf, B. G. Miller, and C. Sheppard. Instead of the usual monthly meeting of the Selwyn Women’s Organisation of the National Party, an open meeting of members of St. Albans, Riccarton, Selwyn, and Sydenham women’s organisations was held recently in the party rooms. Mrs S. C. R. Nicholls, of St. Albans, welcomed members. Mrs R. F. Hill spoke for Riccarton, Mrs D. Mcßae for j Selwyn, and Mrs D. W. Worsfold for Sydenham. Mrs Nola Hamilton sang a bracket of songs, accompanied by Mrs Vile. Mr J. B. Jenkins spoke on the coming election campaign.
When members of the Friends of the Christchurch Cathedral Association met last evening they were entertained by the Rev. Canon W. A. Orange, who gave a tai* on soma personalities in the history of the Cathedral. Mr A. Katonka sang three Schubert songs, and at the beginning of the evening a film of the Cathedral was shown.
The Rev. Mr Warren, of St. David's Presbyterian Church, Sydenham, conducted the devotional service held recently by the Sydenham Pensioners' Club.
