FIRE AT BASE IN ANTARCTIC

Americans Lose Tractor (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. A big caterpillar tractor and a considerable quantity of tools were destroyed by fire in the garage and tool shop of the Williams Air Operating Facility in McMurdo Sound yesterday. This is the United States base. Sir Edmund Hillary, leader of the New Zealand Antarctic expedition based near the Americans at McMurdo Sound, had immediately offered assistance, said the secretary of the Ross Sea Committtee (Mr A. S. Helm) today. “They hope to replace the tools from Little America,” said Mr Helm. “In the meantime, the New Zealanders have offered to lend the Americans anything they have which will be of use to them.” Mr Helm spoke by radio-tele-phone to Sir Edmund Hillary just before noon today. Sir Edmund Hillary said it was quite mild. All were well arid happy at the base.
