Otahuna Stock To Be Sold

The notable Otahuna Red Poll herd of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes will be sold at auction this week The herd, founded in 1898, is the earliest Red Poll herd in New Zealand and the largest. It was begun with English blood and there have been frequent infusions of overseas blood since Cattle from Otahuna have been sold to overseas buyers and al shows throughout the country, and they have gained many championships and trophies. The manager at Otahuna, Mr M. M. Fleming, said yesterday that from discussions with Sil Heaton Rhodes he had learned that when he and Lady Rhodes travelled overseas in the early 1890’s they made a close inspection of all breeds of cattle in England and on the Contineni with the idea of bringing some cattle back to New Zealand. They came to' the conclusion that tht Red Poll was likely to suit Canterbury condition. In 1898 the herd was founded with the importation of Causeway, a bull bred by Lord Amherst, of Hackney, Didlington Hall, Norfolk, and three outstanding females, Nellie the Second and Winsome the Second, bred by Lord Amherst, and Daisy Girl, bred by Mr Garrett Taylor, of Norwich. England. The only imported bull still in the herd is Lydney Airman, which was obtained in 1955 as a yearling from the Lydney Park herd ot Viscount Bledisloe, a former Governor-General of New Zealand. New Herds Formed. In the last three years sales from the herd have been responsible for the foundation of eighi new Red Poll herds in the South Island and two in the North Otahuna Red Polls have also been exported to America, Africa, and Australia. Mr Fleming said that since his association with the herd in 1932 it had won a senior championship and very often both senioi and junior championships al every show in which it nad shown. At Royal shows it had won every cup offering, including the English Red Poll Society's Cup Among cattle which will be sold this week is Otahuna Christina the Ninth, the New Zealand Royal champion in 1955 and South Island champion last year.
