STREET SAFETY PROJECT

Palmerston North Experiment (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. Palmerston North will become New Zealand’s first “safety city” on Wednesday, when the Minister of Transport (Mr W._ S. Goosman) will launch a street safety project. The aim of the project is to find just how safe and simple for traffic p city can be made. It will be in effect a second phase of the “guinea pig highway” experiment which attracted interest from all over the world. The City Council will administer the project through committees of representatives of the Transport Department, the Manawatu Road Safety Council, and interested organisations such as the schools and public transport bodies. Accident statistics will be analysed and investigated and a comprehensive programme of traffic experiments and safety demonstrations carried out. For the first month, emphasis will be on the new road code. Public demonstrations will be conducted on the right-hand rule and procedure at pedestrian crossings. Drivers will be invited to have their cars tested free of charge for brakes, lighting, steering, and general roadworthiness. Suggestion cards will be distributed to allow the public to pass on its ideas on the safety project to the organising committees. The Automobile Association will soon commence “post licence” schools for drivers.
